I founded Access Computer in 1988. I was with Digital and IBM for
over 20 years working with mainframes, mini-computers, and remote
branch controllers. In 1988 I was with IBM and declined a move to Los
Angeles and resigned to start my own small computer service firm.
At that time there was only a couple computer service companies in Charlotte, but I saw there would soon be a computer on every desk in Charlotte (most businesses were not aware of that forecast) and a great opportunity to get in on the ground floor. I had a one room office upstairs in my current building. Through my connections with IBM and my Field Engineer experience at IBM, I obtained approval as an Authorized Warranty and Service Center for IBM.
At that time an IBM AT computer was selling for $3,000.00, but I could custom build one for much less.
I moved into a two room office and hired a part time technician that I trained. We were in business. We serviced IBM computers, and built custom systems under our own brands including "Eclipse" and "MicroNet".
In 1993 l liked Compaq so we became an Authorized Compaq Computer Sales and Service center. We also had some other brands that did not survive the market such as AST and Leading Edge. IBM and Compaq sent hundreds of small businesses to us for service which profited us greatly. Business was very good so we moved into a 3 room office. As laptops became popular we added Toshiba which we still support. ln 2001, we took on Dell and Gateway.
